Sensory responses alert individuals to noxious cutaneous stimuli, and dysregulation of such processes can result in chronic itch. Chronic itch negatively affects patients' quality of life and can be debilitating, but effective treatments have not been developed. The type 2 cytokines interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13 play pathogenetic roles in atopic dermatitis (AD) with its associated chronic itch. In studies aimed at elucidating the mechanisms by which inflammatory molecules elicit itch, Oetjen and colleagues demonstrated that IL-4 and IL-13 activate sensory neurons in mice and in humans.
