The Honeybee Venom Major Allergen Api m 10 (Icarapin) and Its Role in Diagnostics and Treatment of Hymenoptera Venom Allergy
Abstract Purpose of Review In Hymenoptera venom allergy, the research focus has moved from whole venoms to individual allergenic molecules. Api m 10 (icarapin) has been described as a major allergen of honeybee venom (HBV) with potentially high relevance for diagnostics and therapy of venom allergy. Here, we review recent studies on Api m 10 characteristics as well as its role in component-resolved diagnostics and potential implications...

Role of the Microbiome in Allergic Disease Development
Abstract Purpose of Review Evidence suggests that the microbiome of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and airway contribute to health and disease. As we learn more about the role that the microbiota plays in allergic disease development, we can develop therapeutics to alter this pathway. Recent Findings Epidemiologic studies reveal that an association...

Management of Severe Asthma Beyond the Guidelines
Abstract Purpose of Review Asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases worldwide, yet only a small percentage of patients are categorized as having severe disease. Severe asthmatics, however, are responsible for the largest burden of healthcare costs and lost productivity. Several recent guidelines have addressed disease pathogenesis and treatment modalities for these complex patients. Herein, we review the severe...

Clinical Complete Response after Chemotherapy and Palliative Surgery for Unresectable Gastric Cancer
Gastric cancer incidence is high in several countries, and management of advanced gastric cancer remains a challenge. Chemotherapy for unresectable gastric cancers is still evolving, and achieving a complete cure is difficult. Although a clinical complete response to chemotherapy has been reported in patients with unresectable gastric cancer, the chemotherapy duration for these patients is unclear. Here, we report the case of a 71-year-old man who presented with abdominal discomfort. Upper endoscopy...

A Rare Distant Metastasis of Papillary Cystadenocarcinoma Arising from Maxillary Gingiva
Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an uncommon disease with low-grade histological and clinical features. Although the tumor has the potential to produce regional lymph node metastasis, there have been no reports of cases with distant metastasis. We describe a case of papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising from the maxilla that developed pulmonary metastasis 3 years after radical surgery of the primary tumor and regional lymph node. The histological findings were confirmed on resected specimens of the...

Falsely Elevated Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Results due to Interference by M-Component of IgG-Lambda Type
Heterophilic antibodies but also M-components can interfere with laboratory tests causing erroneous results. We report the case of a 75-year-old man with myeloma and a monoclonal immunoglobulin component (M-component) that caused elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) results. The M-component was of the IgG-lambda type. Thyroid markers were analyzed repeatedly, and there was a clear association between IgG concentrations and TSH values (R2 = 0.724). The highest TSH value was 75 mIU/L. Polyethylene...

Inbreeding depression in one of the last DFTD-free wild populations of Tasmanian devils
Background Vulnerable species experiencing inbreeding depression are prone to localised extinctions because of their reduced fitness. For Tasmanian devils, the rapid spread of devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) has led to population declines and fragmentation across the species’ range. Here we show that one of the few remaining DFTD-free populations of Tasmanian devils is experiencing inbreeding depression. Moreover, this population has experienced a significant reduction in reproductive...

Combination of ferric ammonium citrate with cytokines involved in apoptosis and insulin secretion of human pancreatic beta cells related to diabetes in thalassemia
Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common complication found in β-thalassemia patients. The mechanism of DM in β-thalassemia patients is still unclear, but it could be from an iron overload and increase of some cytokines, such as interleukin1-β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). The objective of this study was to study the effect of interaction between ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) and cytokines, IL-1β and TNF-α, on 1.1B4 human pancreatic β-cell line. Methods The effect...

Plastid genomes of the North American Rhus integrifolia-ovata complex and phylogenomic implications of inverted repeat structural evolution in Rhus L.
Plastid genomes (plastomes) represent rich sources of information for phylogenomics, from higher-level studies to below the species level. The genus Rhus (sumac) has received a significant amount of study from phylogenetic and biogeographic perspectives, but genomic studies in this genus are lacking. Rhus integrifolia and R. ovata are two shrubby species of high ecological importance in the southwestern USA and Mexico, where they occupy coastal scrub and chaparral habitats. They hybridize frequently,...

Keraphyton gen. nov., a new Late Devonian fern-like plant from Australia
The first plants related to the ferns are represented by several extinct groups that emerged during the Devonian. Among them, the iridopterids are closely allied to the sphenopsids, a group represented today by the genus Equisetum. They have been documented in Middle to early Late Devonian deposits of Laurussia and the Kazakhstan plate. Their Gondwanan record is poor, with occurrences limited to Venezuela and Morocco. Here we describe a new genus from a late Late Devonian locality of New South Wales....

Background Although the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) can predict poor outcomes in assorted cancers, its prognostic value in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains unclear. We explored the value of preoperative CAR in predicting clinical outcomes in OSCC patients treated with radical surgery. Methods All the recommended cutoff values were defined analyzing receiver operating characteristic curves or overall survival (OS). Dichotomization was performed on the basis...
