Axiomatic Natural Philosophy and the Emergence of Biology of a Science
Abstract Ernst Mayr argued that the emergence of biology as a special science in the early nineteenth century was possible due to the demise of the mathematical model of science and its insistence on demonstrative knowledge. More recently, John Zammito has claimed that the rise of biology as a special science was due to a distinctive experimental, anti-metaphysical, anti-mathematical, and anti-rationalist strand of thought coming from outside of Germany. In this paper we argue...

Evaluation of a Novel Missense Mutation in ABCB4 Gene Causing Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis Type 3
Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 3 (PFIC3) is a hepatic disorder occurring predominantly in childhood and is difficult to diagnose. PFIC3, being a rare autosomal recessive disease, is caused by genetic mutations in both alleles of ABCB4, resulting in the disruption of the bile secretory pathway. The identification of pathogenic effects resulting from different mutations in ABCB4 is the key to revealing the internal cause of disease. These mutations cause truncation, instability,...

Discussing Policy with Prisoners
I teach an anthropology course within the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The course is online in that video lectures, movies, assignments, and discussions are carried out via a computer. The learning process is estranged but also incredibly intimate. I never see my students face-to-face. Students admit to you their deepest fears such as failure to succeed on the outside. They reveal their most profound sins including homicide. They read everything I assign. Their writing is detailed. And,...

Alternative Polyadenylation Modification Patterns Reveal Essential Posttranscription Regulatory Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis in Multiple Tumor Types
Among various risk factors for the initiation and progression of cancer, alternative polyadenylation (APA) is a remarkable endogenous contributor that directly triggers the malignant phenotype of cancer cells. APA affects biological processes at a transcriptional level in various ways. As such, APA can be involved in tumorigenesis through gene expression, protein subcellular localization, or transcription splicing pattern. The APA sites and status of different cancer types may have diverse modification...

The root of anomalously specular reflections from solid surfaces on Saturn’s moon Titan
Nature Communications, Published online: 16 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16663-1Anomalously specular radar reflections (ASRR) from Titan’s tropical region were interpreted earlier as evidence for liquid surfaces, but the Cassini spacecraft did not observe lakes/seas at the anomalously specular locations. Here, the authors show that ASRR originate from one terrain unit, likely paleolakes/paleoseas.
