Error Rates and Uncertainty Reduction in Rule Discovery
Abstract Three new versions of Wason’s 2-4-6 rule discovery task incorporating error rates or feedback of uncertainty reduction, inspired by the error-statistical account in philosophy of science, were employed. In experiments 1 and 2, participants were instructed that some experimenter feedback would be erroneous (control was original 2-4-6 without error). The results showed that performance was impaired when there was probabilistic error. In experiment 3, participants were given...

Phonation With a Variably Occluded Facemask: Effects of Task Duration
Semioccluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises are routinely included in many voice therapy programs because they have been shown to improve acoustic, aerodynamic, and patient-reported voice outcomes. One limitation of the traditional SOVT exercise is that the nature of phonation through straws or semioccluded oral postures allows only for single phoneme production. A variably occluded facemask (VOFM) allows for use of articulated connected speech beyond the production of single phonemes, while still...

Assessment of Dysphonia Using the Japanese Version of the Voice Handicap Index and Determination of Cutoff Points for Screening
The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) is recognized as a useful subjective assessment method for dysphonia. The original VHI has been translated into numerous other languages, including Japanese (J-VHI). Although the reliability and validity of the J-VHI have already been established, the cutoff point has not been determined. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between the J-VHI and other voice laboratory measurements, and determine the cutoff point.

The best rice cookers
Make your kitchen smell amazing. (Louis Hansel via Unsplash/)All you actually need to make rice on the stove is a pot, a lid, and some water. But that isn’t exactly as simple as it sounds. Ensuring your rice is ready at the same time as the rest of your meal can be tricky, plus rice can be stubbornly sticky and hard to clean, and walking away from food simmering on a stove can be a safety hazard. The best rice cookers address all of these concerns and offer features you didn’t even know you needed—until...

Google has free movies and games if you know where to look
It's a little more complicated than simply googling "free stuff." (Benjamin Dada/Unsplash/)Google is one of those “throw spaghetti at the wall” companies. It’s always exploring new areas of tech, whether it’s movies, gaming, cloud storage, or voice assistants. And to make those services more enticing, it often gives away free perks to sweeten the deal. The company hides some of these offers behind menus in its apps, so you might miss out on free movie rentals, Android games, or other treats if you...

Acer’s updated gaming laptop has a sliding keyboard that reveals its cooling system
Two extra vents appear from under the keyboard for extra cooling. (Acer /)Gaming laptops run hot. They consume a lot more power than a typical machine built for Microsoft Word and doomscrolling through social media. Because of all that heat, cooling systems can make a huge difference when it comes to a machine’s overall performance. With its flagship Predator Helios 700 laptop, however, Acer has given the laptop’s internal cooling system a featured spot so that users can actually see and appreciate...

Gallery: From hatch to dials, a look around and inside a B-52 bomber
The B-52H aircraft the morning of the flight. Its serial number is 61-0010, meaning that Congress appropriated the money to build it in 1961, according to Boeing. The only B-52s the Air Force flies today are the H models, which are the least old. (Rob Verger/)The metal elements with the raked edges are the aircraft’s spoilers. When the spoilers on one wing are raised upwards during flight, they cause that wing to generate less lift, spurring the bomber to bank and turn towards that side. (Rob Verger/)The...

Simple, good-looking paper towel holders
Got a mess? Roll with it. (Creatv Eight via Unsplash/)As you think about how to minimize the amount of waste you generate in your home, reusable alternatives to paper towels are a key consideration. However, some messes are so foul or poorly timed that a roll of absorbent paper is your first line of defense. You can still choose recycled paper or renewable bamboo, and compost whenever possible. Keeping your paper towels properly stored also helps reduce the amount of towels you need and can prevent...

Trans people’s access to health care is imperiled, but a recent Supreme Court case might help
Gay- and trans-rights advocates rally in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. (Matt Popovich/Unsplash/)LGBTQIA+ communities across the country celebrated last Monday when a landmark Supreme Court case ruled against workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The case is one of the biggest so far to affirm queer rights, and is the first major transgender rights case to make it through the Supreme Court. SCOTUS declared that the phrasing for discrimination...

Why it matters that race and ethnicity aren’t recorded by the IRS
The lack of race data obscures the ways in which tax collection favors white people. (Unsplash/)If we want to dismantle institutional racism, we need to look back. In the case of the tax code, we need to go more than a century back. Historically, race and ethnicity have not been reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) with other taxation-relevant data like household size and composition. Understanding why this is can illuminate some of the far-reaching consequences of institutional racism.  Many...

Comparison of primary care doctors and dentists in the referral of oral cancer: a systematic review
Oral cancer is referred to specialists by both general practitioners (GPs) and dentists, with varying proportions reported in different studies. However, some have noted that dentists more commonly refer oral cancer in the absence of patient-perceived symptoms and may refer at an earlier stage. Unfortunately, approximately half the UK adult population do not receive regular dental care. We have conducted a systematic review of studies that compare GPs and dentists in the referral of oral cancer and...

Thin superficial inferior epigastric artery perforator flap for reconstruction of the tongue
The superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap is widely used in the repair of large soft tissue defects of the extremities and in breast reconstruction. Because of the high fat content of the abdomen, it has been less used for glossectomy reconstruction. Here we present a series of seven patients who each underwent reconstruction with a thin SIEA flap after resection of the tongue. There were six men and one woman (mean age 48, range 24–66 years). All patients underwent preoperative computed...

Modeling and Numerical Analysis in 3D of Anisotropic and Nonlinear Mechanical Behavior of Tournemire Argillite under High Temperatures and Dynamic Loading
This work proposes a model that takes into account the anisotropy of material with its inhomogeneity and geometrical and material nonlinearities. According to Newton’s second law, the investigations were carried out on the simultaneous effects of mechanical load and thermal treatment on the Tournemire argillite material. The finite difference method was used for the numerical resolution of the problem by the MATLAB 2015a software in order to determine the peak stress and strain of argillite as a...

Using Ultrasound-Treated Washout from Conifer Needles and Fresh Snow Samples in Air Pollution Monitoring
Snow precipitation and snowpack are commonly used to assess the condition of the aerial environment. Another way to monitor air quality is to study trees and shrubs, which are natural barriers for capturing air pollution, including atmospheric particulate matter. The hypothesis of the current study was that using fresh snow precipitation and washout from vegetation for the monitoring of air pollution can produce comparable results. In this study, we compared the results of laser diffraction analysis...
