Detection of Total Reactive Oxygen Species in Adherent Cells by 2',7'-Dichlorodihydrofluorescein Diacetate Staining
Here, we present a protocol to detect total cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) using 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA). This method can visualize cellular ROS localization in adherent cells with a fluorescence microscope and quantify ROS intensity with a fluorescence plate reader. This protocol is simple, efficient and cost-effective.

Fasting mimicking diet as an adjunct to neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer in the multicentre randomized phase 2 DIRECT trial
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16138-3Preclinical evidence suggests that a fasting mimicking diet (FMD) can make cancer cells more vulnerable to chemotherapy, while protecting normal cells. In this randomized phase II clinical trial of 131 patients with HER2 negative early stage breast cancer, the authors demonstrate that FMD is safe and enhances the effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on radiological and pathological tumor response.

Symmetries and cluster synchronization in multilayer networks
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16343-0Complex systems in the real world are often characterized by connected patterns interacting between each other in multiple ways. Here, Della Rossa et al. describe a general method to determine symmetries in multilayer networks and then relate them to different synchronization modes that the networks can exhibit.

TLR2 on blood monocytes senses dengue virus infection and its expression correlates with disease pathogenesis
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16849-7The mechanisms underlying immunpathologies in dengue virus (DENV) infection are incompletely understood. Here, authors show that TLR2 recognizes DENV particles inducing cytokine expression and activating vascular endothelium cells in vitro, and that TLR2 expression on monocytes correlates with disease severity in patients.

Single-particle imaging of stress-promoters induction reveals the interplay between MAPK signaling, chromatin and transcription factors
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16943-wMitogen-Activated Protein Kinases integrate extracellular information in all eukaryotic cells. Using a live mRNA reporter, here the authors monitor transcriptional bursting in Saccharomyces cerevisiae upon hyper-osmotic shock and characterize the influence of MAPK signalling, chromatin and transcription factors on the dynamics of transcription.

An amphipathic peptide with antibiotic activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16950-xPeptide antibiotics often display a very narrow therapeutic index. Here, the authors present an optimized peptide antibiotic with broad-spectrum in vitro activities, in vivo efficacy in multiple disease models against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, and reduced toxicity.

Semiconductive microporous hydrogen-bonded organophosphonic acid frameworks
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16977-0Research in hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) has gained interest in recent years due to their facile design and synthesis but no semiconducting HOF has been reported to date. Here the authors report a thermally stable and proton-conductive organic semiconductor based on a porphyrin HOF.

The mutREAD method detects mutational signatures from low quantities of cancer DNA
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16974-3Sequencing tumour genomes can reveal information about the processes that drive the formation of cancer. Here, the authors describe a method that can detect these mutational signatures from small amounts of DNA and degraded samples.

Ultra-large chemical libraries for the discovery of high-affinity peptide binders
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 June 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16920-3Synthetic peptide libraries can access broad chemical space, but generally examine only ~ 106 compounds. Here, the authors show that in-solution affinity selection, interfaced with nLC-MS/MS sequencing, can identify binders from fully randomized synthetic libraries of 108 members.

Colonic diverticulitis following open-heart surgery: a case report of an unusual postoperative gastrointestinal complication
AbstractDiverticulitis, though a common gastrointestinal disease, is rare following open-heart surgery. There is insufficient data regarding its incidence and management post-cardiac surgery. Especially in patients with atypical presentation, diagnosis and management can be challenging. This case outlines one such atypical diverticulitis case in which a 57-year-old female patient developed perforated diverticulitis with pelvic abscess accumulation following left ventricular aneurysm (LVA) repair....

The dilemma of the duplicated cystic duct: a case report
AbstractWe present a rare case of a duplicated cystic duct encountered during an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a patient with biliary colic. Prompt recognition of an intraoperative bile leak followed by thorough examination and recognition of the source allowed for timely and appropriate management of the affected patient with a satisfactory post-operative outcome. Our case is unique by the lack of availability of intraoperative cholangiogram at the time of surgery, which posed a significant...

Fibrous solitary tumor, a rare and ubiquitous neoplasy
AbstractFibrous solitary tumors (FST) are mesenchymal tumors that can appear in different body regions. It is estimated that around 30% are found in the thoracic region, while rarely in meninges, abdomen, pelvis, extremities and bones. A correct diagnosis is important because 15–20% of cases develop a malignant behavior. Treatment of choice is surgical and posterior follow-up is essential. We present two atypical extrapleural FST cases, diagnosed in our center. Both were treated with surgery and...

Surgical approach and treatment for the orifice of a pyriform sinus fistula: a case report and literature review
AbstractA 4-year-old girl underwent an open-neck surgical procedure for a recurrent pyriform sinus fistula (PSF). A catheter could not be inserted through the endoscope into the opening of the fistula. An open-neck surgical procedure with coring out of the fistula stained with a dye revealed that the fistula was missed near the upper lobe of the left thyroid. A guide wire was successfully inserted via the endoscope into the fistula, and the wire was gripped with forceps under fluoroscopic guidance...
