Correlation of Intracranial Volume With Head Surface Volume in Patients With Multisutural Craniosynostosis
Intracranial volume (ICV) is an important parameter for monitoring patients with multisutural craniosynostosis. Intracranial volume measurements are routinely derived from computed tomography (CT) head scans, which involves ionizing radiation. Estimation of ICV from head surface volumes could prove useful as 3D surface scanners could be used to indirectly acquire ICV information, using a non-invasive, non-ionizing method. Pre- and postoperative 3D CT scans from spring-assisted posterior vault expansion...

Three-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Volumetry of Radial Forearm Flap Reconstructions After Craniomaxillofacial Tumor Resection
Background: Oral cancer is a common and life threatening disease that requires interdisciplinary treatment and often necessitates complex facial reconstruction. Standard care includes tumor resection, while reconstruction is routinely performed with free radial forearm flaps. As esthetic results are crucial for quality of life, flap size, flap volume, and flap composition have to be considered. To date no standardized measurement of flap volume and shrinkage has been established for routine use....

The Protective Effect of Platelet Rich Plasma Against Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity
Cisplatin, a pharmacological agent widely used for treating many cancers, may cause serious side effects including ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and peripheral neuropathy. The present study aimed to investigate whether platelet-rich plasma (PRP) protects against cisplatin ototoxicity. Eight rats (16 ears) were divided into 2 groups: control group (4 rats, 8 ears) that received intratympanic saline and study group (4 rats, 8 ears) that received intratympanic PRP. Cisplatin (10 mg/day intraperitoneally)...

To Serve Those Who Served: Advances in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery During War and Peace
The industrialization of modern warfare dating back to WWI led to an increase in combat-related injuries with unprecedented levels of severity. The necessity of addressing the clinical challenges that ensued led to the emergence of modern reconstructive surgery and subsequently a robust healthcare initiative for veterans in the form of the Department of Veterans Affairs. In the following article, a literature review was conducted to examine the interplay between combat injuries, veterans’ care, and...

Traumatic Brain Injury in Trauma Patients With Isolated Facial Fractures
Background: Diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and specifically mild TBI (mTBI), is a diagnostic challenge which can delay diagnosis preventing early intervention and follow-up care. Facial fractures represent an objective surrogate marker for potential force transmission to the neural cavity. The authors’ objective was to characterize the prevalence of TBI in trauma patients with isolated facial fractures stratified by injury severity. Methods: The authors performed a retrospective...

Effect of Deviated Nasal Septum on Choriodal Thickness
Introduction: Nasal septal deviation (NSD) is one of the major causes of upper airway obstruction. Chronic hypoxia and hypercapnia due to NSD may affect the choroidal blood flow and may change the choroidal thickness (CT). In this study, the authors aimed to research the assessment of CT before and after septoplasty in patients with NSD. Methods: Ninety-two patients who underwent septoplasty surgery with the diagnose of nasal septum deviation and 58 patients for control group were enrolled...

Delayed Periorbital Reconstruction After War Injuries
Introduction: Syrian patients injured in the war frequently undergo rudimentary primary wound closure in combat zones. These patients are later transferred to Lebanon where their wounds need to be secondarily managed. This often leads to the creation of unorthodox approaches for reconstruction of orbital injuries. Case presentation: The authors of this manuscript demonstrate a few cases of peri-ocular trauma with a delayed presentation, in which adaptations of conventional reconstructive...

Elevation of Costal Cartilage Ear Construct for Microtia Using a V-Y Scalp Flap
Autologous ear construction for microtia creates an auricle using a costal cartilage framework. To separate the construct from the mastoid, the most common methods incorporate the use of fascial flaps or skin grafting. The authors describe a V-Y skin and subcutaneous scalp advancement flap for ear elevation as part of autologous ear construction for microtia. The method is simple and reliable and offers advantages compared to other techniques.
