Central Diabetes Insipidus Caused by Arginine Vasopressin Gene Mutation: Report of a Novel Mutation and Review of Literature
Horm Metab ResDOI: 10.1055/a-1175-1307Familial neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus (FNDI) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder characterized by severe polydipsia and polyuria that usually presents in early childhood. In this study, we describe a new arginine vasopressin (AVP) gene mutation in an ethnic German family with FNDI and provide an overview of disease-associated AVP-gene mutations...

Association Between Plasma Homocysteine Levels and Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Adult Subjects: A Meta-Analysis
Horm Metab ResDOI: 10.1055/a-1199-2633Increased plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels have been widely documented in patients with overt hypothyroidism; however, the significance of Hcy level changes in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) remains controversial. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the Hcy status in patients with SCH compared with euthyroid subjects. We searched...

Nicotinamide Nucleotide Transhydrogenase (Nnt) is Related to Obesity in Mice
Horm Metab ResDOI: 10.1055/a-1199-2257The C57BL/6J (B6J) mouse strain has been widely used as a control strain for the study of metabolic diseases and diet induced obesity (DIO). B6J mice carry a spontaneous deletion mutation in the nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt) gene eliminating exons 7–11, resulting in expression of a truncated form of Nnt, an enzyme...

The Ratio of ssDNA to dsDNA in Circulating Cell-Free DNA Extract is a Stable Indicator for Diagnosis of Gastric Cancer
Abstract Due to the different mechanisms of cell-free DNA production, the single-stranded DNA to double-stranded DNA ratio in blood maybe different between healthy individuals and gastric cancer (GC) patients. We aimed to explore the potential application of this ratio in GC diagnosis. The plasma cell-free DNA extracts from 118 healthy individuals and 106 GC patients were prepared. The levels of single-stranded DNA or double-stranded DNA in plasma, and the single-stranded DNA...

A Clinicopathological Approach to Odontogenic Cysts: the Role of Cytokeratin 17 and bcl2 Immunohistochemistry in Identifying Odontogenic Keratocysts
Abstract Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are developmental cysts of the jaws that require proper diagnosis due to their potential for local aggressive growth and recurrences. OKCs have a typical parakeratotic epithelium demonstrating transepithelial cytokeratin 17 (CK17) and basal bcl2 staining on immunohistochemistry (IHC), which distinguishes them from other common jaw cysts. Secondary to inflammation, the epithelial lining may be altered and loses the typical IHC phenotype....

Novel CXCR4 Inhibitor CPZ1344 Inhibits the Proliferation, Migration and Angiogenesis of Glioblastoma
Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) are life-threatening tumors with a poor prognosis and low cure rates. GBMs are malignant brain tumors that develop from astrocytes. Most GBMs are not inherited and occur sporadically. GBM recurrence after standard treatment has led to the assessment of agents targeting the CXCR4 chemokine receptor as alternative drug target for much needed GBM therapeutics. In present study, a novel CXCR4 inhibitor modified with a picolinamide scaffold (CPZ1344) was...

Concordance Between Biopsy and Radical Prostatectomy Gleason Scores: Evaluation of Determinants in a Large-Scale Study of Patients Undergoing RARP in Belgium
Abstract To determine whether Gleason scores were concordant between prostate biopsies (bGS) and the definitive resection specimen (pGS) excised with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP); to identify clinical and pathological factors that might predict upgrading; and to evaluate how upgrading affected outcome. Between 2009 and 2016, 25 Belgian centers participated in collecting prospective data for patients that underwent RARP. We analyzed the concordance rate between the...

Vitamin D, sport and health: a still unresolved clinical issue
Abstract Vitamin D metabolites have a pleiotropic role in human physiology, both in static and dynamic conditions, and a lot of vitamin D-related biological effects could influence physical and sport performances in athletes. Probably due to different factors (e.g., drugs, doping, nutrition, ultraviolet B radiation exposure), in athletes a very high prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy (i.e., deficiency or insufficiency) has been observed. Vitamin D inadequacy in athletes could...

Electrophysiological features in acromegaly: re-thinking the arrhythmic risk?
Abstract Background Acromegaly is disease associated with a specific cardiomyopathy. Hitherto, it has been widely understood that acromegaly carries an increased risk of arrhythmia. Purpose In this review we show that evidences are limited to a small number of case–control studies that reported increased rates of premature ventricular beats (PVB) but no more...

Stem Cell Transcription Factor Sox2 Is Expressed in a Subset of Folliculo-stellate Cells of Growth Hormone–Producing Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumours and Its Expression Shows No Association with Tumour Size or IGF1 Levels: a Clinicopathological Study of 109 Cases
Abstract Sox2 is one of the transcription factors responsible for the maintenance of stem cell phenotype. It has been implicated as a marker of stem cells in normal pituitaries and pituitary neuroendocrine tumours. To explore the clinical significance of Sox2 expression in histological sections, we performed immunohistochemical detection of Sox2 in 113 pituitary neuroendocrine tumours from 109 patients with acromegaly. In 11 tumours, we performed double immunostaining for Sox2,...

Rare neurovascular conflict between oculomotor nerve and posterior communicating artery
Abstract Paroxysmal diplopia could be the expression of a multitude of clinical or anatomical conditions. Both ophthalmological and neurological pathologies could be responsible of this symptom. Rarely, a neurovascular conflict involving the oculomotor nerve is the etiology. We present the case of a 75-year-old man who presented for a 20-year history of transient vertical diplopia. The radiological exams demonstrated the presence of a neurovascular conflict between the right oculomotor...

Infected congenital cervical dermal sinuses leading to spinal cord abscess: two case reports and a review of the literature
Abstract Purpose Congenital dermal sinuses are a rare form of spinal dysraphism. The developmental defects are located along the midline neuroaxis, with sinuses in the cervical region being the least common. Congenital dermal sinuses can be associated with intraspinal infection as they act as a direct route from the skin and subcutaneous tissues into the spinal cord. Methods...
